Hi Everyone,
On Thanksgiving, I wanted to thank each of you for being part of our Climbing Every Mountain community.
It’s been an exciting experience to meet new friends and connect with people who care about people with disabilities.
Now, there are over one hundred and twenty articles or posts, hundreds of comments, and visitors from over ten countries. Inch by inch…. I’ve been reposting some of the “evergreen content” but hope to have new articles for the new year.
But sometimes we need to live in the NOW.
The last couple of posts have been about dreams for the future (click here), and rants about the past (click here).
So NOW: I want to ask each of you to concentrate on TODAY and the people who bring you joy.
Right Now! Just for today, we accept that everything is just the way it is supposed to be.
Sure, we can begin the climb up the mountain again tomorrow, but for today we can feel good about who we are and the people we love.
This might be considered heresy for an advocate: But there are many wonderful things we don’t need to change.
I am so thankful for my husband Tom, who even though he thinks there are only space aliens on the web– he still loves me. After 51 years he is still my best friend.
I also want to thank my wonderful children and family: Aaron, Tommy, Ana, Isabella, and Vivian–I hope I haven’t embarrassed you too much. You do give me amazing memories and stories and teach me what life is all about.
Gift: A Song about Autism
It is hard to always look at “the silver lining,” see “the sunny side” or “the glass half full.” So, on this Thanksgiving Day, give yourself a gift and “listen to the music.”
Through My Eyes is a song about what it feels like to have autism. I thought this was beautiful and hope you will too. “Imagine seeing the world through my eyes.” Enjoy!
Happy Thanksgiving.
Keep Climbing: Onward and Upward
All my best, Mary
Through My Eyes ~ Thanh Bui ~ With lyrics – YouTube
You don’t ever hear songs that express feelings about what it is like to have Autism. At least I have never heard of a song with lyrics that describe what it’s like to have Autism. It is wonderful to see that their voices may be heard through the instrument of music. So powerful.
Music is so powerful, isn’t it? Autism is so complex. We need to listen and keep learning.
This song is such a inspiring song. It’s easy to take some things for granted, and sometimes I don’t appreciate all the things I have. This song is a wonderful reminder that I have a lot to be thankful for. The song gives understanding of disabilities.
Mrs. Ulrich
Loved this song! I am thankful for my health, family, and the world around us. I think too many people take their health for granted, even if it is just the smallest thing. You will never have a bond like your family, so i am grateful to have one that loves me. The world is an amazing place, and i have been privileged enough to travel a little. The song describes autism perfectly in my opinion. It helps others relate or understand a bit of what it is like. It is hard to always look at the glass half full. It’s the struggles that make us stronger and shape us into individuals!
Very wise words Sally. We have so much to be grateful for and if we keep our eyes and hearts open, every day brings blessings.
I loved this!If I had to choose what I was most thankful for, it would probably be my family, more specifically, my little brother. He has made my life so interesting and I would not be who I am today if not for him! I love him beyond reason. I’ve only read books ans different articles about looking through the eyes of someone with autism. This is the first song I’ve ever heard about it. So thank you Dr. Ulrich!
Brandi, it was wonderful to hear you talk about Nick today. Your love came through. There is so much good happening, we just have to keep faith and hope and your brother and Aaron and all the other people who need that extra caring will know love and security.
Wow he is an amazing singer and vocal artist. I only hope that he can inspire others to feel what they are thankful for, looking at their positives rather than a negative.
Personally I am thankful for my ambition to do anything I can put my mind to, my roommates, my new friends and those I still have through my transition, my family, the food I can have every day and the ability to be completely healthy and alive. Too often we don’t think of those kinds of things while being thankful.
You’re right Kara, we all have much to be thankful for. π
This song is a great expression of some emotions someone with autism might feel. Agreeing with Kailey, I have quite a bit to be thankful for. It is hard to not take some of those things for granted because you dont know what life is life without it. People look past simple things like speech that is so natural to most but difficult for others. I am thankful for the simple things and this song gives others a better understanding of what life is like for those with autism.
I’m glad you and Kailey are going to be part of a new generation of speech professionals who can help our children. We all have so much to be thankful for. Thanks Adrianne.
I am beyond thankful for my parents, sister, brothers, and nieces. Iβm so thankful that they are healthy and happy. Iβm thankful for the opportunity to go to the University of Cincinnati and pursue a career as a Speech-Language Pathologist. I have a lot to be thankful for and I will never take that for granted. As for the song Through My Eyes, I thought it was beautiful and touching. I will never understand what itβs like to be an individual with autism, but this song has opened my eyes to what these individuals have to go through every day and I respect them for it.
You’re going to be great at whatever you do Kailey. You have a good heart and caring spirit.
Awww, thanks Mary π
Usually, I say at Thanksgiving I am thankful for my family and their health and of course I am thankful for that. But this year, I also want to say that I am thankful for the technology that has enabled me to rekindle lapsed relationships, strengthen existing ones and particularly create new friendships like the one we have enjoyed this year. Long may it continue and I’m already missing our blogging every day challenge π Happy Thanksgiving!
You are the best Alison. Start gettting ideas. We could do another daily challenge in January or ????
